Due to the ongoing heavy rain and flooding affecting the area, Brown’s 259th Opening Convocation exercises scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 4:00 p.m. have been postponed and will now take place on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 10 a.m.
On Saturday, the Convocation procession of incoming students will form on College St. at 9:30 a.m. and step off at 9:50 a.m. Senior Administrators and Faculty who will participate in the procession should arrive in academic regalia on the path between University Hall and Slater Hall at 9:40 a.m. Guest seating will be limited, and guests are encouraged to watch the ceremony via livestream at https://www.brown.edu/web/livestream/ which will begin at 9:50 a.m.
In recognition of the tradition of procession for students beginning their education at Brown, the Van Wickle Gates will remain open until 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, and from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, for any student who is unable to attend Opening Convocation on Saturday morning.
Brown's 259th Opening Convocation
During Opening Convocation, incoming students take part in the tradition of walking through the Van Wickle Gates and into the Brown community. During the ceremony, President Christina H. Paxson will officially proclaim the opening of the academic year and welcome new students to campus.
The 2022 keynote address, “Breaking Boundaries and Building Bridges through Community and Collaboration,” will be delivered by Sorensen Family Dean of Engineering Tejal A. Desai.
Event attendees, including visitors and guests, must comply with all public health-related University policies and protocols in place at the time of the event.
